Troubleshooting Connecting Google Business Profile

Please note: Google My Business (GMB) was recently rebranded as Google Business Profile (GBP) - this should not impact your ability to connect Google to your Moz Local location profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The connect all option when connecting Google will tell the Moz Local tool you want to connect all your Moz Local locations to the selected Google account and group. This means that the tool will create new Google Business Profiles for any locations it is not able to find in the designated Google account.
  • If the owner of a Google Business Profile listing makes an update to a data field directly in Google Business Profile after connecting the listing to a Moz Local location profile, Moz Local will not override that update with the data in Moz Local. This applies only to changes made by the owner of the Google Business Profile listing. It is recommended that changes to data fields for your location’s profile be made in Moz Local in order to establish one source of truth.
  • If you’ve requested, and received, a verification code from Google for your location, it will need to be entered in your Google Business Profile account directly. You can read more about location verification via Google’s Help Forum.

I’m receiving a 400 error when trying to connect my Google account

If you are receiving a 400 error when trying to connect Google to your Moz Local location profile, please try connecting via an incognito window. This 400 error is often an issue with cached data that is keeping the tool from being able to connect.

The location I want to connect isn’t an option in the listing connector

If you’re not seeing the location you’re trying to connect as an option in the location connector module, you can try the below steps to try and solve the problem:

  1. Try connecting via an incognito window.
  2. Ensure that you have owner or manager rights for the location you’re trying to connect. (Site manager permissions will not allow you to connect).
  3. Ensure that the name and address for the location you’re trying to connect match.
  4. Ensure that the pin placement on the map in Moz Local matches the pin placement on the map in your Google Business Profile account.
  5. If the location you’re trying to connect is not in a location group, please try using the link at the bottom to connect via your ungrouped locations.

The listing connector says my location is already connected

During the connection process, the Local Listing Connector will show that your location is already connected to Moz Local if…

You have previously connected this Google account but did not grant full permissions to the Local Listing Connector

If you have multiple locations within your Google Business Profile (GBP) account and have connected this account to Moz Local in the past without granting full permissions to the Local Listing Connector, the tool will think that your location is already connected.

To solve this issue:

  1. Disconnect Google from your locations
  2. Revoke the token for the Local Listing Connector in Google Business Profile
  3. Restart the connection process in Moz Local.
You have another Moz Local location for the same location and it is connected to Google Business Profile

You may also see this messaging if you have another Moz Local account in which you’re managing this location. If this location is already connected to the associated Google Business Profile account, you won’t be able to connect it again.

The Directories tab says my location is being manually reviewed

After connecting Google to Moz Local, if you’re seeing the message under Pending Actions that Your location is being manually reviewed this indicates that your location is still in the Data Cleansing process. Once your data is fully cleansed, you should see this messaging resolved and your Google Search shield will update accordingly for data submission.

The Directories tab says my location is already present on Google

If you’re seeing the message under Pending Actions that Your location is already present and verified on Google it means that we are detecting there is a verified location on Google for this location but it is not in the Google account you’ve connected or tried to connect. To verify which account you’ve connected to Moz Local, you can hover over the i icon beside Details.

If you’re not sure which account owns a Google Business Profile account, you can head here to enter the business information and be given a clue by Google as to what email is associated with a Google Business Profile. Google will not reveal the entire email address associated with the location but what they do display may help to point you in the right direction. Alternatively, if you’re working with a client’s listing, you may need to check with them to ensure the Google account you’re connecting has owner or manager permissions for this location.
