Frequently Asked Questions

  • Unfortunately, the limits in Rank Checker can't be reset manually. They will automatically reset at midnight, GMT.
  • No, we don't currently offer local keyword tracking in the Rank Checker tool. You can track keywords locally with a Moz Pro Campaign.
  • No, Rank Checker does not provide an option to have the data sent via email. If you’d like to track rankings overtime and have an email sent regularly, we would suggest tracking the keyword in your Moz Pro Campaign.
  • No, Rank Checker is meant for on-demand spot checking. To automate weekly rank tracking, just head over to your Campaigns.
  • Moz’s volume data is specific to Google which means you will see “no data” noted when searching Bing or Yahoo.
  • Moz has volume data for 500M US keywords and various other countries around the world. No data means this keyword is not in our keyword volume database.
  • Difficulty shows you how tough it would be to rank in the top 10 spots for that keyword. We arrive at this score by analyzing the strength of the top 10 organic blue links on the search engine results page (SERP). A Difficulty score of 1 is not difficult at all, and 100 is very difficult.
  • We will keep and display your historical rankings data for up to one year in the rank history graph.

Check Keyword Rankings with Rank Checker

Want to do one-off research into your client's rankings, or check out a competitor? We've got a tool for that! Rank Checker is available with your Moz Pro subscription and you can reach it through the menu here:

To get started:

  1. Enter the Keyword you’re wanting to check.
  2. Select whether you want to see rankings for the Subdomain or Exact Page you enter.
  3. Enter the URL you’re wanting to check the rank for.
  4. Select the Engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, or Google Mobile) whose ranks you want to check.
  5. Select the Country you’d like to check rankings for.
  6. Click the Search button.

By choosing the Subdomain option, you'll be able to find out if that term is ranking for any page on that subdomain and Rank Checker will report the exact URL with the highest rank for the keyword you are researching.

You can also check the Exact Page option if you would like to see how a specific page is ranking for the keyword you’ve entered.

Rank Checker Results

Once you submit your request, you’ll be presented with a table that shows you the Keyword, Ranking URL, Rank (with the chosen search engine noted), Volume, Difficulty, and the date this rank was Last Checked.

If you would like to see the full ranking URL for a pairing, hover over the ranking URL column. This can be particularly useful when checking rankings for a subdomain.

You can also click the Page Check icon next to Rank to head to On-Page Grader and see how well optimized this page is for this keyword.

Keyword Limits

Standard and Medium Moz Pro subscribers can check 200 rankings a day.

You’ll be able to check your allowance below the query bars. Refreshing an existing keyword and URL pair will use up one query.

Rank Check History and Refreshing Ranks

Like most SEOs, you’ll want to know if your ranking position is climbing or falling. No problem! When you’re ready to see how your rank has changed for a pairing you checked in the past, click the Refresh icon next to the rank. This will show you the new, updated rank for that pairing. If you're seeing a grey refresh icon, this means you've already checked the rank for this pairing today. You are only able to check the rank for a pairing once a day.

You can also opt to refresh your pairings in bulk by selecting the keywords using the boxes on the left and clicking Refresh.

To see how your pairing has performed over time, click the Arrow in the History column to open a drawer view. This view will include a graph with data points for each time you refreshed the rank of that pairing as far back as one year.

The Refresh option in the Rank Checker tool is not related to the data in your Moz Pro Campaign. This is a stand-alone tool that is separate from your Campaign data. It is intended to provide you with the ability to spot check rankings for you or your competitors.

If you want to track the history of any of these keywords within a Campaign, you can use the Add to Campaign button on the top right. Select the keywords you'd like to track in your Campaign using the check boxes on the left and click Add to Campaign. Data for your newly added keyword will be collected and added to your Campaign with the next weekly Campaign update.

Exporting Data

If you’d like to export your Rank Checker data, you can use the Export CSV on the right.

Within the CSV, the URL column denotes the URL you entered to check and the Ranking URL denotes the URL that is actually ranking for this pairing.

Searching and Sorting

If you ever need to find a pairing that you’ve already created to refresh the rank or check the historical data, you can use the search bar to search by Keyword or URL.

In addition to searching for pairings you’ve created, you can also sort your Rank Checker results by any of the column headers. By clicking the arrows beside the column header, you can sort the table in ascending or descending order for that metric column.
