Overview of Monitoring Local Markets

Due to the strategic direction we're moving toward with Moz Pro, we’ve decided to remove the full Local Market Analytics feature starting on May 31, 2022 in favor of integrating its most beneficial features into other areas of the tool as determined by your feedback throughout the beta.

Key features which users identified as the most helpful within Local Market Analytics include market based page & keyword rankings, local search volume, and multi-sampling SERP technology. We hope to provide you with solutions within existing Moz tools to help with these facets of your SEO strategy while also including competitive research and tracking.

The Moz Tools offer a variety of solutions for monitoring and tracking local markets for your website. Below, we’ll outline Moz tools you can use to fill the gaps of your localized rank tracking.

Tracking Market-Based Rankings

Rankings within Moz Pro Campaigns allows you to add locally tracked keywords to track over time. You can then label and filter segments of keywords based on market location.

To get started, head to the Rankings section of your Campaign and scroll down to Rankings overview. Select the keywords you’d like to track locally and click Add Locations. You can then enter in the locations you’d like to track by city name or postal code.

You can add additional locations to track for keywords you're already tracking by clicking add location.

Alternatively, you can add new keywords to track locally by clicking Add Keywords. You can then add in the keywords you’d like to track and specify the location by city name or postal code.

The Add Keywords button offers the option to add all new keywords to track locally.

Rankings data for locally tracked keywords will be collected with your next weekly Campaign update. In the meantime, you can create markets within your Rankings by filtering your tracked keywords by Location and then labeling the keywords by your market. For example, if you would like to track rankings for multiple zip codes in the Seattle area, follow the below steps:

  1. Add keywords to track by each postal code within your market

  2. Filter your Tracked Keywords by each newly added postal code

  3. Apply a label (Like Seattle Market) to the filtered keywords

Segmenting keyword data allows for comparison between multiple data sets.

You can then filter your rankings by this market and compare Search Visibility to other markets or keyword segments as needed.

Finding Local Search Volume

If you are looking to acquire localized search volume at scale, STAT (a Moz product) can help with that and more! This enterprise solution offers the ability to track keywords locally and to see key metrics like search volume and share of voice.

In STAT, the share of voice metric measures the visibility of a given keyword set on Google, effectively giving you your market share for SEO.

Download STAT’s local pack report to get business names, URLs, ranking positions, Google ratings, counts of ratings, and ads at your fingertips making measuring your local SEO efforts infinitely easier.

Preview Localized SERPs

When tracking local keywords in Moz Pro, you have the ability to see the live SERP for the keywords you’re tracking. From the Rankings Overview, click any tracked keyword to be taken to Analyze a Keyword. From here you can scroll down to SERP Analysis to see the current SERP for the selected keyword and location.

SERP Analysis in Analyze a Keyword offers a live SERP for you to preview.

Additionally, you can head to Analyze a Keyword directly from the left-hand navigation and select a keyword from the drop-down provided.

In Analyze a Keyword you can select keywords to review from right within the tool.

Discover Competitors

With Moz’s Competitive Research tool suite, you and your team can identify who your competitors are along with where there may be gaps in your keyword rankings and research.

The True Competitor tool can help you to identify who your true market competitors are and the websites which are competing in the same SERPs for your website. After entering in your domain, you will have the option to select two competitors to analyze so you’re able to identify keyword gaps and opportunities for improvement.

The Keyword Gap tool allows you to compare your domain against your competitors to pinpoint gaps and opportunities for rankings, content creation, and more. This tool will even help to identify potential traffic lift you can gain from outranking your competitors.

Although these tools are not market specific, they can help you to better understand who your competitors are and who you may want to track rankings against in your Moz Pro Campaign.

Track Competitors

Within your Moz Pro Campaign, you have the ability to track rankings for up to 3 competitors. This also allows you to compare your segmented keyword data across markets and competitors to see where you are excelling and where your competitors are coming out ahead.

Once you've identified your competitors you can track them in your Campaign.

If you need to track more than 3 competitors, you can set up multiple Campaigns with different sets of competitors. This can help you to further segment your data and make decisions about content and strategy.
