  • We have seen a lot of shifting and movement in the search engines as of late. So I am curious as to what people are setting their sights on for 2012. And perhaps a top 3 would be appreciated. This is Internet Marketing goals, therefore SEO, Social Media, PPC, all count. Link Building? Schema.org? Facebook optimization? And try to be a little more specific like URL rewrites instead of just On-Site SEO.

  • Hi everyone! Presently, our web developer team is redesigning our website(live football today). Right now, our website is ranking well on all our targeted keywords. Soon our new website are going to be live. I'm worried about our present ranking. Will it affect our current ranking? If yes, how can we maintain our SEO rankings? Thanks!

  • We have a website and we are getting good traffic to it. Now its ranking high for most of the potential keywords even if it is not at all SEO friendly. We are planning to redesign it. Will that affect the SEO Ranking?

  • Hi All, I have an issue on Google Search Console. It seems all my affiliate links are being crawled. Is this a bad thing? The reason I found out is that all but one link was flagged with a warming. It goes on to say that it was blocked by robots.txt. The strange thing is that I've not set any links to be blocked in robots.txt. Also, should affiliate links be nofollow?  I'm asking because I was recently sent this article by Yoast on how to properly cloak my affiliate links without using a plugin. https://yoast.com/cloak-affiliate-links/  In the method, they apply the nofollow and noindex rules to the links. I'm just a little confused on how to go about affiliate links the SEO friendly way.

  • Hello Moz community I am running an amazon affiliate blog and from the last 8 months it was going great but 2 months before i noticed that un-natural and spammy chinese anchors links are getting indexed and they were getting indexed continuosely day by day. I thought there is no problem with that so few of my fellows said its not a big deal so i didn't take any action. Within few days my rankings dropped and keep dropping continuously and from featured snippet i moved to page 9th of google. Can anybody help me with how should i take steps to remove the penalty.I think that site is hit by penguin. My only page http://17oxen.com/best-external-hard-drives is affected and all the spammy links were indexed on this link all other remaining articles are not affecred as google said that they will penalize only the specific page not the whole domain. Guys i would like to know your recommendations and any kind of help. Thanks

  • Hi, I know about people using expired domains to drive juice to their primary site but what about people using AN expired domain as their primary site (totally changing that site into a trashy affiliate-marketing vehicle)? The site I'm looking at is thegunzone.com.  It has, according to Semrush, almost 38K links.  It used to be a legit 17-year-old firearms hobby site, and this is what it originally looked like: http://web.archive.org/web/20120213184627/http://thegunzone.com:80/ Here is its last page before it closed and the domain purchased by the affiliate marketer: http://web.archive.org/web/20170315084035/http://www.thegunzone.com/ It closed around February of 2017, and some affiliate marketer bought it and all its backlinks.  However, all those backlinks, which were previously to various articles, are now directed back to those articles (which don't exist anymore) but the homepage, including Wikipedia links.  Here's an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygonal_rifling At the bottom, in the 7th Reference, there's a link to an article called " "Learning About Shooting . . ." but if you click on the original link, it just goes to thegunzone.com homepage.  Again, the site's totally different.   And there are just thousands of such backlinks to former articles that don't exist anymore but are redirected to this schlocky site's homepage (and it's passing its juice through too). My question is this:  this cannot be kosher with Google backlinking policies, right?  Is this prevalent on the internet?  Why hasn't thegunzone.com been found out and its rankings penalized yet?  And how do I report him?   I see tons of other sites using this basic strategy too on search results with various hunting keywords.  (Disclosure:  I do own a hunting/firearms blog, but I don't do any backlinking at all.) Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

  • Hi Everyone, Are there any display networks that are notably less expensive than Google's Display Network? By this, I mean less than $0.01 U.S. CPC's for real people and not bots. On the Google network, I've tried the trick of opening a sister account with a cheaper currency, but in the end, I wasn't able to get much lower than $0.01 U.S. per click after converting back to U.S. dollars. Thanks, Andy

  • Google is mixing a programming term name with a home product and ranking that programming website on top. And there is another 2 search results from the same website (DA - 56, PA - 55, Links - 71K, RD - 4500). Their positions are 1, 2 and 3.  But the question/ answer section is showing question/ answer for both of the products, and there is local section, top stories, images, videos, Wikipedia, amazon, ad and an e-commerce site which is showing the home product. There are in total 7 results, and 1 ad. Google also showing description of both of the products on the right. 1,2,3 - Programming website, 4. Amazon,  5. Wikipedia, 6. Wikipedia, 7. E-commerce How difficult it could be to outrank the top result?

  • Hey Guys, I've been working on Blast My Deals.com an affiliate site which i have an issue hoping you guys can help with. For the past year and a half we created loads of links from multiple domains at-least over 700+ which Webmasters did pick up since then we've created even more links however when we go in to our Search Console "Links to your site" it shows 214 domains. It seems like our old links are being removed and our new links aren't being added. All the links we created have an average of DA40+ For the past 2 weeks ive noticed a significant drop in organic traffic and loosing our positions on our main keywords. Our DA has also dropped from 33 to 29 in a matter of 2 weeks. I checked everything including robots.txt, sitemap.xml but Im unable to find the reason for it.

  • We are using Canonical tags at almost all the pages of our eCommerce website. We have various sorting options like "High to Low", "Best Sellers", etc., due to this page URLs get change with some dynamic URL parameters. To avoid duplicity, we are using canonical tag on each page which point to the original url. Also, we are using IBM Coremetrics to track traffic and conversions, but to measure referral traffic in Coremetrics, we have to add tracking parameters in the URL. So, while link building we need to share URLs with Coremetrics tracking parameters in the URL, but the canonical of this page is pointing to the original URL. Suppose we have a Page that needs to be shared with Coremetrics tag: domain.com/category-name/?cm_mmc=Referral_-xyz--izUPF8VmRng--3 This Page has the canonical tag pointing to the original url: domain.com/category-name/ My question is if the URL: domain.com/category-name?cm_mmc=Referral_-xyz--izUPF8VmRng--3 got shared on other websites, will it pass link juice to the original URL: domain.com/category-name.

  • Hi guys, Situation: A website selling a mix of products from various vendors. When a product's Buy Now get clicked, it redirects to the vendor's website so the order can be placed there. Question: How do I track all these conversions reliably? Is there any shortcut? Also, what do they need to do technically to make it work, and will it send to my GA or is it any tool that will record these conversions? Does anyone do this actively? Thanks for ALL the ANSWERS!

  • Hi, I am in the process of setting up an affiliate marketing campaign for my site. I have done a bit of research and understand that it is safest in terms of SEO to add no-follow to the links from the affiliate sites. What is the easiest and simplest way to implement this?

  • We have affiliate links applied to our index URL - https://playon.co - which are not picked up as a duplicate URLs by Google. We've applied a canonical URL, but our homepage is a 301 redirect to a page with a language parameter. So what happens is: https://playon.co/ goes to https://playon.co/en Affiliate links such as https://playon.co/#/?affiliate_token=1390448caccb7d go to https://playon.co/en#/?affiliate_token=1390448caccb7d This gets picked up as rel="canonical" href="https://playon.co/en" which I assumed marked it as a non-canonical page. Nonetheless, we keep seeing this affiliate "page" ranking - even above our own homepage for some terms. Worse, the affiliate URL also contains old cached information of the page. I don't even see how these SERP results should exist, because the affiliate link just ends up at the homepage (https://playon.co/en) My questions: What can we do to remove these affiliate URL versions of our homepage from being ranked? Google doesn't see anything after the hash in the indexed affiliate URLs. If we were to no-index our index URL (https://playon.co/) to completely remove the affiliates links, would our canonical version (https://playon.co/en) assume the top listing, or will we have effectively nuked our entire site? Appreciate any help.

  • Hi guys, I'm new here but I already spent hours reading the forums. I didn't post before because I didn't feel the need to, but today it's different. I don't want to take fixing steps that are not optimal for my website situation. So here's the problem : I am working on an affiliate website that is growing day after day and is already profitable. It is not by any mean a thin affiliate site. It's a french language website with product reviews on it. Right now there is 1 main page (hero page) per review in which I describe the products, put affiliate links, present useful information, etc. These pages have a good word count and I am targeting 1-2 main keywords on them which I consider a good practice. Couple of months ago I decided to add a product page for each one (normally it's 5 products per review) so I added 5 more page per review, targeting product names as new keywords. Problem is that : Product names are very similar to the main keywords (keyword cannibalization problem) There is very little added information on the product page when you compare it to the hero page (too thin) A lot of information is repeated on each of the product pages. I think this is bad. So I decided to keep only the hero pages to keep more link juice, avoid keyword cannibalization, improve page authority and get more content on one single page (only information that was not repeated have been added to hero page). I removed ALL THE LINKS to product pages (from the hero page). So now for my questions : Is it better to keep the product pages in my sitemap or to delete them right away? Is it better to let the product pages die by themselves over time or to 301 redirect all the product pages to hero page to keep link juice? The next question is a bit more complicated. Hope you guys understand what I mean. Considering that product pages are now gone, this will for sure weaken my bounce rate % because only hero page with good/deep information will be accessible to visitors (there is not a lot of internal links in each review, except to other, RELATED reviews). Is setting up goals in google analytics + telling google that it should consider a click on an affiliate link as a NEW PAGE VIEW (like it would act for a click on a link of a product on my own domain) will help for SERPs and SEO?? Or it will just help ME to see a lower bounce rate and setting goals? In other words, is tracking these links and let google see them as new pages clicks will help for the page rankings or not? Because from what I am understanding, a good bounce rate helps for rankings. If the changes made to avoid keyword cannibalization work, when could I potentially see the effects/benefits in the SERPs and trafic?

  • Hey, Wondering if anyone can help. There are a few things within this query, specific to our site, so thought I would group it all together in one post, as they are no doubt all connected. I’ve been working on SEO for my price comparison website for the last year or so. https://www.fitness-savvy.co.uk However, our rankings have not noticeably improved since we first started ranking in Google around 6-9 months ago. I have been building high DA links to the site, getting the on-page SEO perfect according to Yoast, Squirrly and Moz on-page checker, site speed for the pages I want to rank for is better than the competition on page 1 etc. I can see things like our Protein Calculator on page 1 of Bing, and Exercise Bikes on page 4. So the work I am doing seems to be having an effect there at least. However, in Google it just seems static. In fact, January should be the best time for our site. Searches on our keywords double around now. Since 2nd January there has been a huge drop in organic traffic to our site according to Google Analytics. Checked Search Console, and as suspected, massive drop. Lowest average position and impressions for the last 3 months. We were having around 1,200-2,000 impressions per day with an average ranking of 35-45. Now 600 impressions per day with ranking of 75. I thought I would leave it a few days before posting on here to see if there was any improvement but unfortunately there hasn't been. We had our 3 best days in a row at the end of December, in regards to organic traffic before the drop off. Thought this was a sign of what was to come in January, so needless to say I am gutted that our visibility in the search engines seems to have gone at the most important time of year for our site. We have no manual penalty, I have looked to see if there are any algorithm updates and have not seen anything, nothing fundamentally has changed with our site. The only potentially significant thing that happened at the start of January was that we released our first press release. This was done through PRWeb, and has been published in a few places, so there was a jump in links back to our site – all no follow links. Our DA according to Moz actually increased a couple of days ago from 23 to 25. This does not take into account a lot of recent backlinks which Google Search Console is showing from high DA sites – one of which is a .gov directory with Moz DA of 100, and some bloggers I reached out to with DA's ranging from 40-50. So, if anything, I would assume our rankings would increase and then even more traffic to arrive at our site due to the time of year. On Ahrefs, the number of organic keywords we rank for was 1,800 about 4 months ago and now 2,200. We were ranked 18,000,000 or so a few months back, we are now 4,700,000 based on our backlink profile. So while there has been an increase in keywords we rank for, it is not substantial given the amount of work on the SEO side of things I have been doing. Interestingly, the only thing we rank for is our article on top personal trainers for 2017. And the ranking for this seems unaffected during the recent drop: https://www.fitness-savvy.co.uk/best-online-personal-trainer-websites/ This article was produced with the intention of securing links back from those we listed. However, it is now ranked page 1 of Google for numerous keywords – regardless of the fact that on page SEO was non-existent, there are no links back to that page, the page authority is terrible etc. By all accounts, this page should not be ranking like it is - especially given the keyword difficulty (25) compared to most of the other "low-hanging fruit" keywords we are looking to rank on (0-20). Needless to say, after thousands of hours of link building, on page SEO, research, learning, and investment into tools such as Moz, Ahrefs, Squirrly, Yoast etc, investment in developers to help improve page load speeds, I am feeling defeated. Any advice on the following would be much appreciated: Why might this page for personal trainers be ranking so well? Page speed is horrendous – 40 on mobile and 38 on desktop. Much lower than any other on page 1. The only thing I can see which is different about this page is the number of social shares. This page also links out to lots of external “relevant” site, so maybe that is having a strong effect. There is about 1 external link per 150 words or so. If we were to receive a manual penalty for some reason from Google, would this be issued before/at the same time as the drop in rankings, or could this have happened but we have simply not been notified yet? Why, after nearly a year of link building has there been very little increase in traffic? I would have expected to rank significantly better with the amount of high quality, high DA sites we now have linking to us which were not there 6 months ago. Our domain is nearly a year old. From what I read, domain age doesn't play a huge role, but maybe this is a reason why we are still not ranking for very much. I am hoping that this is the main reason - that we are less than a year old, and that once we've been around more than 12 months there will be an improvement. Is there something fundamentally wrong with the site, or what I am doing which is negatively affecting it? I’ve disavowed a few spammy sites that link back to us, but maybe I should be doing more? I’ve tried just about everything with link building that I have read up on – guest blogging, directory listings, forums, producing valuable "linkable" content, resource pages, ego bait etc. Do I continue in this way and just keep chipping at it and rest assured that rankings – at some point – will improve? What would your advice be, regarding what I should prioritise to start seeing results? Many thanks in advance, Robin.

  • We have pages with lots of unique content that are ranking very well in google.
I am now considering to add towards the end of the pages widgets from the booking.com affiliate program and also from the affiliate program of two other accommodtion sites. These affilliate widgets would be placed far beyond our core content in the bottom 15% of the page. Each widget will contain a large number of links to the different accomodation options that booking.com or others offer. In our context this information would be indeed very useful for our visitors. Shall I be concerned that our google rankings may suffer due to google perceiving our site as less quality (or google misinterpreting our intent to generate traffic to affiliate programs) ? If google rankings would be suffering, is this something we would normally see in a week (most of our pages are crawled daily by google)  and then recover in a week when we would remove the widgets or would this generally be something that would affect the ranking over the course of a month or more? Shall I be concerned abou link dillution since my pages would now have a lot of links pointing to the affiliate sites, which could devalue my internal links? Any thoughts?

What's the best practice going about this without jeopardizing domain authority from tons of duplicate content signals firing off?

  • I was wondering what SEOMoz' thoughts are on the mega legitimate link wheel sites that are out there. TechMediaNet have been buying up massive news/media sites which arent really monetised (adsense) like http://www.space.com/ http://www.ouramazingplanet.com/ livescience.com and others and generating, admittedly good quality, curated content. Then seeding them with content with backlinks to their money site, toptenreviews.com which in essence is a review site with thousands of pages loaded with affiliate links no better than any of the other site out there. e.g. http://www.livescience.com/9755-bing.html due to the scale of what they're doing pretty much any keyword search i do with review in it (the last thing i wanted to purchase was a usb 3 hub) ends up with toptenreviews.com dominating the serps presumably due to the high PR the viral nature of the media sites are working with. Do you think Google will crack down on this, or do you think it's capitalism in action? TechMediaNet have invested millions in this project and just gotten another $33 million in funding recently.....

  • Hi there, Our online business https://www.irishcelticjewellery.com is based in Ireland but targets USA and European markets. We have been heavily focused on Adwords as the primary traffic source, and a few months ago attempted to revamp and fine-tune this, which negative results. I believe we moved too fast and changed too many configurations too quickly. Organic traffic has been neglected, and so has stayed flat at approx 10% of traffic, however analytics suggests that the majority of these visitors have less than 30% bounce rate, view more than 6 pages/visit, and have been the source of more than 50% of our sales over a 2 year period. Based on this, I see a huge need to focus on organic now, and I'm wondering if you have any advice on building back-links. I have begun listing the website in as many relevant business directories as I can find, and we recently began pushing the website on social media as much as our budget allows. I'm mainly considering targeting complimentary websites, asking them to link to us in exchange for a 4-5% of each sale originating from their backlinks to us. Is that a realistic approach to building backlinks? and do you think this kind of arrangement will be well-received generally? We're a small operation, with a tight budget. Also, Is social worth pursuing? Thanks in advance, any advice is much appreciated. Alan

  • First of all i want to say hi to everyone here since im a new guy! The issue: My website is a price comparison website. I create products and inside these products i list several shops with their priced offers from the lowest to the highest. When a customer clicks the "shop now" button to go to the desired shop a new window pops up telling the user that he is being redirected to that shop. Check the website here and click "shop now" to understand what i mean: https://www.pccdkeys.com/product/buy-world-of-warcraft-legion-cd-key-for-battlenet/ This pop up page is a custom .php called redirect.php. In order to create a unique url for each shop, we add parameters in every URL like this: /redirect.php?id=5030917189616&merchant=CDKEYS&game=4117. The redirect.php right now is under this setting: custom header 301 without destination URL (which probably is wrong) it is noindex, follow in meta robots the parameters: **id, merchant, game **are set to NO URL's in URL parameters in webmaster tools. If i remove the 301 redirect from the header it will lead to 200 OK but then its a soft 404 error because the page is small and for sure i dont want 8000 of soft 404 errors because google phantom will destroy me. Another setting was: No custom header so it was 200 OK noindex, nofollow (which was for extra protection from the disallow) disallowed in robots.txt Thi setting kept giving soft 404 errors in audits. I also had it with this setting: custom header 301 without destination URL meta robots in index, follow without disallow in robots This setting gave me Not followed errors in google webmaster tools. The question: Which is the proper setting for this php page? Maybe a combination of the above? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

  • I want to add autotrack.js to affiliate quote forms hosted on my site. However, I do not know how it will affect affiliate websites (not associated with my quote forms, but with the same Google Analytics code, that do not use autotrack. I read that "Autotrack is not an official Google Analytics product and does not qualify for GA Premium". Will it harm my affiliates in any way to have autotrack on their quote form but not on their websites? It will have their GA website tracking number.

  • Hi, we have an affiliate system and use rel=**canonical **to canonicalise them to the right link.  Still, we see those links creating duplicate page titles, in Moz crawl and in Google search console. • I look after an affiliate site that is doing quite well in the search rankings. We've been doing a review of our practices and one thing that has cropped up is our robots.txt. In it, we disallow Google from crawling external links. This used to be best practice in the affiliate industry a couple of years ago, but I wanted to know if this is still the case, and what the implications are if we were to: a/ leave it as is? b/ allow crawling? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi moz fans!
I'm working on some client sites.
They have a lot of products, which they are selling through their webshop and two affiliate sites.
    But I can't stop wondering:
The affilate sites are using the same product descriptions and images - Will Google see that as duplicate content?
And if so.. How can I prevent that? The two affiliate sites are well etablished and huge sites, so I guess they know what they are doing.. Is there some way I can check it? When I do a google search, whit the "My product description text", I'm getting some different results: Sometimes all three sites appear (main site, and affilate) Sometimes it's only the affilates Sometimes it's only the main site. So to make it short:
If i'm using affliate, will Google see it as duplicate content?
How do I check it, and how do I prevent it? Thank you!

  • Hey all, I'm on the hunt for a service that will crawl our affiliate links and let us know when they return an error. I need to know that the last URL in the chain is returning a 200 over thousands of pages and links on a continual basis. The hitch is that most crawlers like Screaming Frog will return all of our links as working because it's only testing the first step, and this really requires a cloud solution anyway. Anyone happen to know of something? Edit for clarity's sake: I need something to check entire redirect chains in bulk that isn't a Wordpress plugin, isn't a website where you plug in a URL and it cuts you off after the first 100 results, and has the ability to crawl the site and provide reporting on a continual basis. • On my site, gosandiego.com I have a couple links at the top which directly link to another site. However, I noticed that when I click on the link, it seems to go to another site for a few milliseconds before being redirected to the correct destination. It took a little while but I was able to take a screenshot of the sneaky redirect. It starts awin1.com/awclick.php... I am fairly sure that awin1.com belongs to Affiliate Window, an affiliate marketing company much like Commission Junction but smaller. I just had someone email about my site and said the link redirected on him too but his browser got sent to viglink.com I was wondering, Has someone hijacked my site or has someone hijacked my browser or is it something else? Thanks 0LBwUoc

  • I have recently switched all my travel affiliate links to TripAdvisor using their javascript code that converts the natural links (direct links to TA URLs) to affiliate links. I have set up goal tracking in GA to try to put a monetary value on clicks through to these links (based on the known conversion rate to commissionable bookings) but GA is over-reporting the goals by a very large margin. I'm wondering what I've done wrong. The first screen shot below is of the goal settings I used in GA. The second screenshot shows that GA is reporting 7125 goal completions since I set up the goal on 7 August. The third screenshot shows the actual number of GA events recorded on outbound clicks to TA URLs in the same period, which is just 97. So the goal completions being recorded far exceed the actual goal completions, but I'm not sure why. I know I've done something wrong but as this is the first time I've used goals, I'd appreciate some help to see what I've done wrong. Thank you. 3f7dc3de6f9f1373d47994144a5cb016 56aa39130a7d54b07d8f2ce9cf1d7fb0 35ee827275928ca8c4d4c941f0672ef8

  • Hey all, Please feel free to impart your wisdom, I'm in a bit of a pickle and I could use your help. I'm struggling with my display advertising channel. I think it has a lot to do with our almost non-existent nurturing funnel but I'm trying to see if there are other marketers who have struggled with the same type of situation. My Google rep is talking about GSP (Gmail Sponsored Promotion) as an option for bringing in more traffic but I'm concerned it'll have the same problem as display. Does anyone have any experience here either good or bad? Does a strong nurturing funnel make the difference with regards to these more outbound related marketing channels? Thanks, Jacob

  • Hi, I'm looking into setting up an affiliate programme (as an advertiser). The company offers commercial mortgages for a UK market only. I was wondering if you had any experience with any UK affiliate platforms and had any recommendations? I want to test the water with a platform first as we don't really know whether it will work for us or not. We're looking at it for lead generation. Potentially offering payment on a completed mortgage or a lower payment per lead. I think it may be worthwhile offering both options. I'll have to work out the model, but we can make it work nicely for the publisher, I think. Thanks, Amelia

  • Hello, A colleague recently asked me about affiliate marketing for our clients, and my answer for a few years now has been emphatically "no", because I had not seen it done in positive way. How does everyone weigh in affiliate marketing, and what companies and/or software would you suggest? For example, is http://www.admedia.com/ a reputable source? I see lots of bad reviews on these guys. Any thoughts, suggestions, etc would be extremely valuable. Thanks in advance!

  • Hi, I have a client that wants to get started with Google Hotel Finder, can anyone offer any resources to help me get them started? I've reviewed the documents Google has published regarding hotel finder, but it doesn't really breakdown any information on how to get indexed, only that they're "pulling from a number of different data sources". Any and all insight you guys can offer would be great, thank you in advance!
