How much is the site architecture impacting my site?
-
Hi there,
I'm interested to learn how much the site archecture of griffith.ie (higher education) maybe impacting our rankings. In recent months there was some changes to the the faculty landing pages but not to the site archecture.
The rankings in the last 6 months have dipped a little.
There are two main path ways to get to the course.
1. Course finder - https://www.griffith.ie**/find-a-course** =>
2. Faculties - https://www.griffith.ie**/faculties**
Most of the SEO authority is coming through the Faculties pages as this is where all the courses are found in term of the url structure.
For example; https://www.griffith.ie**/faculties/**business/courses/ba-hons-accounting-finance
The UX on the site tells a different story and directs people to the course finder. /find-a-course
Ideally, I feel the site would benefit much more if all the traffic was directed through the course finder however this would require (I think) a big redevelopment of the search tool and
I feel we are diluting our efforts as when somebody arrives to the site through the homepage they go through the course finder and if they come through specific searches they get taken to the specific course page under the faculty section.
the site has has this archecture for the best part of 4 years and I'm considering recommend a change if it would greatly improve SEO and UX.
Any feedback on this would be great.
Many Thanks
Rob

This is the estimated performance and authority for the /faculties path and all of its contained sub-folders and pages:
https://ahrefs.com/site-explorer/overview/v2/prefix/live?target=www.griffith.ie%2Ffaculties
Screenshot: https://d.pr/i/D9gFrv.png
Here's the same thing for find a course:
https://ahrefs.com/site-explorer/overview/v2/prefix/live?target=www.griffith.ie%2Ffind-a-course
Screenshot: https://d.pr/i/t88UIa.png
Your faculties section has way more linking domains, organic keywords ranking on Google and has better SEO performance (generally). If you were to change the architecture so that our courses sit under the course finder, instead of under the faculties section (which is best-performing of the two) which links and pages might be impacted?
Here you can see the top pages listed inside of the /faculties section:
Screenshot: https://d.pr/i/LAa2dJ.png (I highlighted 'courses' related URLs with red boxes)
CSV Download: https://d.pr/f/Haz8WS.csv
It looks as if a lot of the top content is course related, so changing the URL architecture could potentially unseat a lot of powerful links and cause you some problems. Links to redirects, often aren't as powerful as directly connected links
Here are some of the best backlinks to the /faculties site section:
Screenshot: https://d.pr/i/nv3EWH.png (I highlighted 'courses' related backlinks with red boxes)
CVS Download: https://d.pr/f/JdJAPx.csv
Again, it seems that lots of decent links are actually hitting individual course URLs, which would make me feel uneasy about 'unseating' those links, by changing the URLs which they are supposed to land upon
In SEO, large architectural changes often do result in a short term dip and loss. By doing what you are proposing, you will cause short term disruption which could see lower results. Your hope would be that in the medium to long term, performance would increase beyond what you would have gained without the changes
A crude example would be something like this:
https://d.pr/i/f8HRub.png (this is a hypothetical line-chart, I'm not actually doing your forecasting for you based on external data only - that would be crazy!)
Your disruption will, in all likelihood disconnect some links and SEO authority from your site whilst making other links connect indirectly rather than directly (passing through 301 redirects). There's an efficiency loss here which means you're likely to see a dip. The question is, do you think that dip is worth it and how confident are you about achieving more than before - after the dip has run its course?
You could be lucky and not even see a dip if the contents of the pages will be exactly the same and it's (pretty much) only the URL which is changing. Google do check to see if the (last cached) origin URL for redirects, and the redirect destinations are similar - before allowing full SEO authority to flow through a 301 redirect (so even the mighty 301 is subject to checks, balances, and some degree of equity loss)
If you are really good at your 301s, harvesting all the legacy URLs with links (in addition to your live pages) then you can avoid a dip - but you have to be pretty pro with your data-sourcing, data aggregation and crawling skills. If that's not you, expect to encounter a small to medium dip - and to require more budget later for clean-up
I think your project would require a moderate amount of dev work, but even that can be expensive when trying to win budget from another department. Before you move ahead with this, you'll have to be very confident of the long-term gains with some data-led reasoning and insights
I can't make this decision for you, but hopefully some of my data will help you

How does Google's AJAX Announcement Impact the likes of AngularJS?
Google's announcement last month about depreciating their AJAX crawl directive and Distilled's recent article have got me thinking a lot about how this change impacts frameworks like AngularJS. For those of you that use or are considering using frameworks like AngularJS, does this change impact you? Has it changed your mind about services like Prerender etc? All discussions relating to AJAX crawling welcome. Some resources to get started: https://prerender.io/js-seo/angularjs-seo-get-your-site-indexed-and-to-the-top-of-the-search-results/ https://www.distilled.net/resources/prerender-and-you-a-case-study-in-ajax-crawlability/

Sitemap Question - Very Old Ecommerce Site, Never Used A Map
I help manage a family website, that has about 10,000 products... It was top ranked since 1996, then got smacked by Penguin and recovered but its still receiving only a fraction of the natural traffic it used to get. Something we have never used... Is a sitemap. I'm curious if anyone knows reliable software that will generate a sitemap? My cart is custom built, website uses html pages across the board. Dynamic content and parameters are set up properly, onsite seo is in the excellent range. The only thing that I haven't been utilizing is a sitemap. Because the cart was hand built, it would a huge convenience to use a lightweight program thats compatible with any website, has parameter settings, exclusions and anything else useful to negate any duplicate content. I have a few highly dynamic pages as well... If anyone knows a product or a possible solution, it would be much appreciated. Working it up myself would be very time consuming. Thx

Does stock art photo attribution negatively impact SEO by leaking Google Page Rank?
Greetings: Companies such as Shutterstock often require that buyers place credit attribution on their web pages when photos you buy from them appear on these pages.. Shutterstock requests that credit attribution links such as these be added: Songquan Deng / Shutterstock.com Do these links negatively impact SEO? Or do search engines view them as a positive? Thanks,

Is there something fundamentally wrong with our site architecture?
Hi everyone! Could a few of you brilliant people take a look at the architecture of this site http://www.ccisolutions.com, and let me know if you see any obvious problems? I have run the site through XENU, and all of our most important pages, including categories and products, are no deeper than level 3. Everything deeper than that is, in most cases, an image, a pdf or an orphaned page (of which we have thousands). Could having thousands upon thousands of orphaned pages be having a more hurtful effect on our rankings than our site architecture? I have made loud noises and suggested that duplicate content, site speed and dilution of page authority due to all those orphaned pages are some of the primary reasons we don't rank as well as we could. But, I think those suggestions just aren't sexy or dramatic enough, so there is much shaking of heads and discussion that it must be something fundamentally wrong with site architecture. I know re-arranging the furniture is more fun than scrubbing the floors, but I think our problems are more about fundamental cleanup than moving things around What do you think?

Critique a site I'm working on please
Hi guys, I have a list of things to do on this website that is longer than my arm but thought I would gather a few more thoughts on the site before moving on further with it. The site is here. It went live a couple of days ago for live testing. I have a news section coming very soon at theworkplacedepot.co.uk/news - it is in live testing now. One glaring issue for me is that some of the products simply aren't "buyable". What I mean by that is that the options are too vague and too vast - as an outsider I wouldnt have a clue what I was buying! Other issues: The banner at the bottom of the HP is a test - its design will be changing. The sitemap has some issues and will be addressed. There is no area yet to "log-in". However, critique for me pretty please! 🙂

The content will be more or less identical with the one on the standard desktop site (domainname.xx), but im struggeling to find out if this will create dipplicate content between the mobile and desktop site. Does anyone have a solid answer for this one?

Suggestions For My Ecommerce Site
I am starting to work on an ecommerce site that I am part owner of. My partner who is the other owner started the site a while back and because he has no internet marketing experience the site didn't come out very well. I am currently overhauling the site and here is a list of things first on my list so I can at least get started on some seo and even ppc. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at our store and see if you think I am missing anything or you could suggest anything else that really should be done immediately or something that is wrong. The site is www.clubfitnesswarehouse.com Update magento to newest version Fix url structure to be SEO friendly for homepage, category pages, product pages etc. For an example of a site that has great seo friendly urls please refer to examples on http://www.bigfitness.com/ site. For example these pages. http://www.bigfitness.com/treadmillstore.html , http://www.bigfitness.com/bosplincy.html , Remove top navigation menu and instead create left sidebar navigation menu created to navigate site and products. For example of these types of sidebars please refer to sidebar on http://www.bigfitness.com/ or http://www.americanfitness.net/ We will NOT be using same structure as what is in top navigation currently. Categories and keywords of categories will be changed and some will stay the same structure as is currently in navigation For header we would like to feature our shipping policy, returns, privacy policy, no sales tax etc. For example I have seen that I like refer to http://www.spiderofficechairs.com/ Obviously we do not want to copy but something similar for our own site. All images on homepage must be changed to include clickable txt so google can read text not just pictures. We would also like product pages modified to make more user friendly and conversion increased. Add to cart button needs to be changed, text needs to be brighter instead of dull grey color. Add to cart button must also be moved ABOVE THE FOLD! Also on product pages we would like to add sections in addition to Product Description, of Specs, and About section for each product page. We also need the ability to change this information as needed when we need to.
