      Hello - my company is planning to transition to a new website domain sometime this year, probably about six months from now.

      Our current website does not currently get much organic traffic from unbranded search terms. I would really like to fix that by publishing lots of new blog posts and trying to get more backlinks.

      But with the website transition on the horizon, I'm wondering if I should hold off on posting new pages and getting backlinks for the time being. Then once the new website is live, I can start to ramp things up.

      What would you do in this situation?

      Also, does anyone know of any thorough guides or walk-throughs that cover all of the best practices (re: SEO) when migrating to a new website domain?

        Sorry for the slow reply!

        There are a number of good posts on Moz about migraitons in general - e.g. https://moz.com/blog/website-migration-guide

        However, redirect mapping is the crucial step to get right from an SEO perspective.

        Your question about content and links is an astute one - you might well dilute some of the strength you build in the process of a migration. But, this strength takes a very long time to build, so my advice would be to start early. Yes, it will be diluted, but this way you'll be waiting 6 months less to see results.

          301 Redirects from example.com to store.example.com and then removing store.example.com subdomain

          Hi I'm trying to wrap my head around the best approach for migrating our website. We're migrating from our example.com (joomla) site to our existing store.example.com (shopify) site... with the plan to finish the redirects/migration then remove the subdomain from shopify and use example.com moving forward. I've never done this and asking here to see if any harm will come from re-directing example.com URLs to store.example.com URL's then changing the store.example.com URL's to example.com. Right now my plan would run like this: redirect example.com URL's to store.example.com remove subdomain on store.example.com use example.com moving forward. wonder what happens next? Is there going to be any issues here, possible harm to the URL's?

          Client wants a seperate .tv domain for their media/videos instead of a subdomain/subfolder. What is the best way to pass of link equity to a new domain?

          We have a client that wants to place their video content on a .tv tld instead of a subfolder/subdomain in their .com website.  They believe that the .tv domain will better represent the media experience of their business.  We can understand this client's position however we are concerned about their .tv domain will lose out on the link equity if it were no longer placed in the .com's subdomain/subfolder. Here are our questions: 1.  What would be the best way to pass of link equity from .com website to a new .tv domain?  Should we just have a video link on the .com website that 301 directs to the new .tv domain? 2.  Is there any SEO benefit of having a .tv domain for Google Video queries or even Youtube? 3.  Is there any long term value of having two different websites?  For link equity purposes we understand that it would be better if everything was in a .com.  However is a .tv domain ideal for a better representation of their media content? We appreciate any feedback.

          Website not properly listed on google organic despite SEO efforts

          Hello, I have worked thoroughly on my website tags including HTML titles, URLs, H1 headers and text on each section. The problem is that despite this effort, my website does not seem to improve in terms of ranking (the onsite optimization has been done 6 months ago already). We have a sitemap, we have done link building and everything but still no tangible progress. The anomaly I am experiencing is the following: If I search on Google.com.lb for "aparment for sale in lebanon" I don't get the section on my website that is optimized for that particular query (which is the Buy section located here http://www.ramcolb.com/apartment-sale-beirut-lebanon). my site appears only on page 6 but the Homepage appears which is very counter intuitive because it is not optimized for the "apartment for sale in Lebanon" keyword. And this anomaly is present on almost all sections and their relevant queries. The relevant section for the particular query never appears, it is always another irrelevant section that appears but far in the listings (beyond page 6). It is as if Google hasn't indexed properly my website and is mixing up the sections... Has anyone experienced this type of problems? what can be done? Thanks in advance

          When migrating website platforms but keeping the domain name how best do we add the new site to google webmaster tools? Best redirect practices?

          We are moving from BigCommerce to Shopify but maintaining our domain name and need to make sure that all links redirect to their corresponding links. We understand the nature of 301s and are fine with that, but when it comes to adding the site to google webmaster tools, not losing link juice and the change of address tool we are kind of lost. Any advice would be most welcome. Thank you so much in advance!

          Does anyone know why my website's domain authority has dropped from 51 to 49

          However this does not seem to be in isolation. All of my competitors websites have taken a similar 1 or 2 points hit. I am thinking that as an industry we may have been affected by a mutual linking site being taken down, redesigned or just loosing its own domain authority. We do rank well for our keywords and we have been on a continual rise since I took over in January, we do a little bit of a guest blogging and I am trying to build links to the site but I am doing it slowly. Would anyone else have an idea on what has happened that would cause 4 sites in the same industry to take a 1 or 2 point hit? Thanks, Emmet

          Moving categories to new domain

          Hello Mozzers , I'm trying to find best possible solution for this situation. So there is a website (e-commerce) and since it's grew up too much we are looking to move several categories on different domain. The reason for this is that we introduce completely different product group  (example: we have products that are related to watches and everything related to watch industry but now we introduce leather products: wallets, bags etc). Do you think it is worth it to move new categories to new domain in order to better target this product group?  In case of positive answer which is the best way to do it - 301 redirect or leave the products on this site and build a new site with slightly different product description and names?           Hi We are setting up a new domain to focus on a specific product and want to use some of the content from the original domain on the new site and remove it from the original. The content is appropriate for the new domain and will be irrelevant for the original domain and we want to avoid creating completely new content. There will be a link between the two domains. What is the best practice for this to avoid duplicate content and a potential Panda penalty?
